Website Mission
Mission “Went looking for the art and we were the art.” Glenn Ligon, 2015As Wellesley College has hosted, housed, and educated a lineage of Black artists and Black arteducators, against the backdrop of Wellesley College being the first American college to offer anart history major, it is past time for a community to be established that nourishes thepropagation of Black art in this space. As we are surrounded by art, artists, and art historians, asperformance series have invited Black artists to our campus, there shall never be a void of Blackart once they depart. Black artists at Wellesley have the potential to harness a glowing artisticpresence for our school and the Boston area; by establishing a community that nurtures thispotential and passion, we assert our presence, our aesthetic, and our language. As society wishesto stifle our expression and joyful existence, the Black Arts Collective is avant-garde. Ourmission shall be to live by the reaction of Wellesley alumna Lorraine O’Grady to the assertionthat “avant-garde art has nothing to do with Black people,” and present ourselves as the livingproof of otherwise.
