About Us
Wellesley FreeStyle is a hip-hop dance troupe with influences from different musical genres and styles of dance. Established by Melissa Mackie Raz, Zaïmah “Jamia” Sulayman, and Mijha Butcher Godfrey in 1997, FreeStyle was created from the co-founders’ passion for dance and performance. 25 years later, and the love continues to burn strongly, with FreeStyle’s annual showcases Spotlight and Jam On It showcases. We believe dance is an enhancer of the college experience for dancers and non-dancers alike. As the premiere hip-hop dance organization on campus, we strive to promote and maintain an interest in all aspects of dance culture within and outside of the college community through original, creative choreography, technical and expressive performances, critical observation of dance, and an understanding of dance in the various contexts of history and culture. Through our genre of dance, we aspire to connect the Wellesley community to the larger and longer community of dance that spans cultures, places, and time.
